Bar Council of Delhi Warns Lawyers Against Advertising Legal Services on Social Media

The Bar Council of Delhi has issued a formal caution to lawyers, warning them against using social media platforms to solicit work or advertise their legal services. The Council noted a growing trend of self-promotion by lawyers online, which it said violates professional conduct rules and undermines the dignity of the legal profession.

The notice, issued by Chairman Surya Prakash Khatri, flags concerns about advocates posting videos, personal interactions, interviews, or photographs linked to cases in an attempt to attract clients—directly or indirectly. The Council described these actions as “unethical canvassing” and a clear breach of professional ethics.

“Such methods clearly constitute unethical canvassing, infringing upon professional ethics and dignity of legal practice,” the notice said.

In particular, the Bar Council highlighted the rise of “self-styled legal influencers”, many of whom are not even qualified or licensed, but continue to share content and opinions on sensitive legal issues. The Council noted that this kind of misinformation is not only misleading but also prohibited under Rule 36 of the Bar Council of India Rules.

It warned that any violation of this rule would amount to serious professional misconduct, making an advocate liable under Section 35 of the Advocates Act, 1961, which allows for suspension or cancellation of licence to practice.
