The Allahabad High Court has dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) challenging the organisation of summer workshops on the Ramayana and the Vedas in government schools across Uttar Pradesh.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Arun Bhasali and Justice Kshitij Shailendra held that the petitioner failed to comply with the mandatory requirements of the High Court Rules regarding PILs, particularly the disclosure of credentials and personal interest in the matter.
The PIL was filed in response to a letter issued on May 5, 2025, by the Director of the International Ramayana and Vedic Research Institute, Ayodhya. The letter had requested all Basic Shiksha Adhikaris (BSAs) in the state to allow the conduct of “Summer Ramayana” and “Veda Abhiruchi” workshops in all 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh.
“The petitioner, without disclosing his credentials except claiming to be a socially conscious citizen and academic, has failed to comply with the requirements of the Allahabad High Court Rules pertaining to PILs,” the court observed. It further noted, “The petitioner has not explained how he came into possession of the communication from the District Basic Education Officer, Maharajganj, while he resides in Deoria.”
The bench also remarked that the petitioner appeared to have “suppressed his credentials,” raising doubts about the bona fides of the litigation.
