The Delhi High Court has appointed Special Judge (PC Act) (CBI) Kaveri Baweja, known for handling high-profile and politically sensitive cases, as the new Registrar (Vigilance) of the Court on deputation.
An administrative order issued by the High Court on Monday confirmed Baweja’s appointment:
“Hon’ble the Chief Justice has been pleased to appoint Ms. Kaveri Baweja, an Officer of Delhi Higher Judicial Service, presently posted as Special Judge (PC Act) (CBI), as Registrar (Vigilance) in this Court on deputation basis with immediate effect.”
She takes over from Pawan Kumar Jain, who has been repatriated to his parent cadre and directed to report back to Tis Hazari Courts.
Judge Baweja has been presiding over several prominent cases at the Rouse Avenue Courts. Among them are matters arising from the Delhi excise policy probe, involving senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders. She had previously denied regular bail to former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and remanded Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to ED custody. She also rejected Kejriwal’s interim bail plea on medical grounds.
Her tenure as Special Judge also saw a significant judgment earlier this year when she sentenced Congress leader Sajjan Kumar to life imprisonment in connection with the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
More recently, in a move that drew legal and political attention, Judge Baweja stayed a trial court’s order directing the Delhi Police to investigate BJP leader and Delhi Law Minister Kapil Mishra’s alleged role in inciting the 2020 Delhi riots.
Her appointment to the vigilance post within the High Court signals a continuation of her involvement in matters requiring strong judicial oversight and administrative integrity.
