In a recent development, the Kerala High Court has granted interim protection from arrest to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader P C George until February 17, 2025, in relation to an alleged hate speech case. The decision was issued by Justice P V Kunhikrishnan during a hearing on George’s anticipatory bail plea.
The court’s decision comes after the Kottayam District Sessions Court rejected George’s anticipatory bail request on Thursday. George, a former Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), faced charges following a complaint by Muhamed Shihab, a leader of the Muslim Youth League. Shihab’s complaint to the Erattupetta police accused George of making remarks during a television discussion that could potentially incite religious hatred.
George was booked under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including section 196(1)(a) for promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, and section 299 for deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings by insulting religion or religious beliefs. Additionally, he faces charges under section 120(o) of the Kerala Police Act for causing nuisance and violating public order.
The High Court’s order to postpone any arrest comes as a relief to George, who will remain free until the next hearing of his case. “The petitioner shall not be arrested till the next posting date. Post on February 17, 2025,” stated the High Court.
