In a significant move, the President of India has appointed Advocate Praveen Kumar Giri as Judge of the Allahabad High Court. The appointment, made under Article 217(1) of the Constitution of India, was announced by the Ministry of Law and Justice in an official notification dated January 23, 2025.
The notification, stated that Advocate Praveen Kumar Giri will assume the role of Judge from the date he takes charge of his office. This appointment reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening the judiciary by introducing skilled and experienced advocates into its ranks.
Praveen Kumar Giri, born on January 20, 1975, in the village of Vishunpura Buapur under the Ahraula police station in Azamgarh, hails from the family of Komal Prasad Giri, who served as a Warrant Officer in the Indian Army. His early education took place at Janata Inter College in his village. He later pursued a BA, LLB, and LLM from Allahabad University.
In 2002, Praveen Kumar Giri began practicing law in the High Court under the mentorship of Senior Advocate Anand Dev Giri, a former Solicitor General of India, and his son Shashank Dev Giri. He primarily specialized in criminal law. In 2017, the Uttar Pradesh government appointed him as Additional Chief Standing Counsel, and subsequently, he was elevated to the position of Additional Advocate General.
Currently residing in Prayagraj’s Transport Nagar, Praveen Kumar Giri holds the distinction of becoming the youngest Additional Advocate General of the state.
The notification was communicated to key government and judicial authorities, including the Registrar General of the Allahabad High Court, the Secretary to the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, and the Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh, among others.
Advocate Praveen Kumar Giri’s elevation to the bench comes as part of efforts to ensure efficient disposal of cases and uphold the principles of justice. His appointment is expected to enhance the capacity of the Allahabad High Court, which serves as one of the largest high courts in the country.
The legal fraternity and the judiciary have welcomed the appointment, expressing optimism that Advocate Giri’s extensive experience will contribute significantly to the administration of justice in the state of Uttar Pradesh.
