Justice DK Upadhyay Takes Oath as Chief Justice of Delhi High Court

Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya was sworn in today as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, following a formal oath-taking ceremony held at the Raj Bhavan. The oath was administered by the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, officially marking the beginning of Justice Upadhyaya’s tenure in the national capital’s highest court.

The appointment follows the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendation on January 7, 2025, for Justice Upadhyaya’s transfer from the Bombay High Court, where he had been serving as Chief Justice since July 29, 2023. A notification issued by the government stated that under Article 222(1) of the Constitution of India, the President, in consultation with the Chief Justice of India, approved the transfer, directing Justice Upadhyaya to assume charge at the Delhi High Court.

Justice Upadhyaya brings to his new role an illustrious career spanning over three decades. A graduate of Lucknow University, he completed his law degree in 1991 and began his legal practice on May 11 of the same year, focusing on civil and constitutional law at the Allahabad High Court. His judicial journey commenced on November 21, 2011, when he was appointed an additional judge of the Allahabad High Court, eventually becoming a permanent judge on August 6, 2013.
