In a significant judicial development, the Union Government announced on Friday, January 17, the elevation of Justices Kardak Ete and Mridul Kumar Kalita to permanent judges of the Gauhati High Court. The appointment, sanctioned by the President, comes following the recommendations from the Supreme Court Collegium on January 7.
Justice Kardak Ete, who initially joined the Gauhati High Court as an Additional Judge on March 13, 2023, has had a distinguished career in law. Graduating with an LLB from the Campus Law Centre at Delhi University, he was enrolled as an advocate in 1999 and has been actively involved in legal practice across the northeastern states. His contributions were recognized through his designation as a Senior Advocate in 2014, and he has served in several key legal advisory roles, including as the Acting Advocate General for Arunachal Pradesh in 2021.
Justice Mridul Kumar Kalita’s journey to this appointment began with his elevation as an Additional Judge on April 20, 2023. After earning a B.Sc. from Arya Vidyapeeth College and an LL.B from the University Law College at Gauhati University, he completed his LL.M in 1997. Prior to joining the judiciary, Justice Kalita practiced law for several years and contributed to legal education as a lecturer at J.B. Law College, Guwahati. His judicial service commenced on May 10, 2000, when he joined the Assam Judicial Service.
This transition from Additional to Permanent Judges marks a notable advancement in their judicial careers and is expected to bring continued stability and judicial acumen to the bench of the Gauhati High Court.
