On Monday, the Supreme Court requested that former bureaucrats and social activists, who have filed a plea against an upcoming ‘Dharam Sansad’ event in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, send an email to request urgent listing. The petitioners allege the event could involve calls for the “genocide of Muslims.”
Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, along with Justice Sanjay Kumar, heard the plea which was presented by lawyer Prashant Bhushan. Bhushan emphasized the urgency due to the event’s scheduled start on Tuesday. In response, Chief Justice Khanna advised, “I will consider. Please send an email.”
The controversial ‘Dharam Sansad’, organized by the Yati Narsinghanand Foundation, is set to occur from Tuesday to Saturday at the Shiv-Shakti temple complex in Dasna, Ghaziabad. This gathering has drawn significant scrutiny and criticism, paralleling past events that have similarly sparked outrage over alleged hate speeches.
The petition, spearheaded by notable figures such as activist Aruna Roy and retired bureaucrats Ashok Kumar Sharma, Deb Mukarji, and Navrekha Sharma, accuses the Ghaziabad district administration and the Uttar Pradesh Police of contempt. They assert that these authorities have ignored Supreme Court orders to proactively combat communal activities and hate speech.
