PETA India has recognized retired Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud as the “Most Influential Vegan” for 2024, celebrating his and his family’s commitment to veganism. Inspired by his daughters, Priyanka and Mahi, Justice Chandrachud adopted a vegan lifestyle, advocating for ethical treatment towards all living beings.
In a heartfelt video released by PETA India, Justice Chandrachud, alongside his wife, Kalpana Das, and their daughters, delved into the personal reasons behind their lifestyle shift. The video highlights how their vegan choices align with core Indian values of compassion and respect for life. “Our Constitution underlines the need for compassion towards all living creatures through Article 51A(g), emphasizing the fundamental duties of every citizen,” stated the former Chief Justice.
Kalpana Das, an active animal rights advocate, echoed this sentiment in the video, pointing out that animals experience a wide range of emotions, including pain and joy. “Recognizing that animals have feelings similar to humans can deeply influence our choices,” she said.
Dr. Kiran Ahuja, PETA India’s Manager of Vegan Projects, praised the Chandrachud family for their influence, particularly highlighting the role of Priyanka and Mahi in inspiring both youth and adults to embrace a life of kindness. “The family’s dedication not only honors their ethical principles but also serves as a beacon encouraging others to consider veganism for the welfare of animals, personal health, and environmental sustainability,” Dr. Ahuja commented.
This award, previously bestowed on figures like spiritual leader Brahmarishi Mohanji and Vedanta teacher Acharya Prashant, underscores the growing recognition of veganism as a viable and compassionate lifestyle choice. With this honor, Justice Chandrachud joins a distinguished list of individuals who have made significant impacts through their ethical choices and advocacy.
