Calcutta High Court Cancels Bail of Accused in IAS Officer’s Wife Assault Case Due to Police Lapses

In a shocking incident that has raised questions about police efficiency and victim support, the wife of an IAS officer in Kolkata was sexually assaulted at gunpoint. The incident, which took place on the night between July 14 and 15, came to light shortly after a similar tragic event involving the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College.

The accused in this case had initially been granted bail by a lower court, a decision that drew criticism and was later overturned by the Kolkata High Court due to evident police negligence. The court has also ordered the removal of the investigating officer responsible for handling the case.

According to reports, the assailant forcibly entered the victim’s home around 11:30 PM and committed the crime. Despite the severity of the accusations, the victim faced significant delays when trying to report the incident at the Lake Police Station, where she was made to wait for hours before the FIR was filed under seemingly lenient charges.

The victim, whose husband was out of state for work, expressed her distress over the initial handling of the case. She filed a petition in the Kolkata High Court, leading to a hearing where Justice Rajarshi Bhardwaj critically addressed the mishandling of the FIR and the distortion of the chargesheet.
