Former Principal of RG Kar Hospital Appeals to Supreme Court Over Calcutta High Court Ruling

Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, has taken his legal battle to the Supreme Court, challenging a decision by the Calcuta High Court. The High Court had rejected his request to be included as a party in a lawsuit concerning alleged financial irregularities at the hospital during his administration.

This move by Ghosh comes in the aftermath of the Calcutta High Court’s August 23 decision, which not only denied his involvement in the ongoing case but also escalated the investigation from a state-constituted Special Investigation Team (SIT) to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The decision aligned with demands from Akhtar Ali, a former deputy superintendent of the hospital, who petitioned for the involvement of the Enforcement Directorate to probe the financial discrepancies purportedly occurring under Ghosh’s tenure.

The controversy surrounding RG Kar Medical College and Hospital intensified following the tragic death of a junior doctor, whose body was discovered on August 9 in the hospital’s seminar hall, bearing severe injury marks suggestive of murder and possible sexual assault. The incident has not only led to a civic volunteer’s arrest by Kolkata Police but has also ignited protests across the nation, casting a further shadow over the hospital’s management.

By challenging the High Court’s ruling, Ghosh seeks to assert his relevance and possibly influence the proceedings related to allegations of financial mismanagement during his time as principal. His plea to be considered a “necessary party” in the case reflects his attempt to clear his name or mitigate the repercussions of the allegations leveled against him.
