The hearing to determine whether a teenage driver involved in a fatal car crash should be treated as an adult has been postponed to September 16 by the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) in Pune. The crash, involving a Porsche in Kalyaninagar, resulted in the deaths of two IT professionals in the early hours of May 19.
Additionally, the board deferred decisions on two applications from the defense, which sought the release of the impounded Porsche and the minor’s passport.
A police officer involved in the case stated, “We have sought adjournment as we need time to file our response to the applications filed by the defense seeking the release of their properties.”
The defense has argued against treating the minor as an adult, noting that the offense does not fall within the “heinous” category. This response came after the prosecution filed a plea to consider the severity of the incident.
The accused minor, who was 17 years and 8 months old at the time of the accident, reportedly drove under the influence and caused the fatal accident. Following the incident, the police brought the minor before the JJB, seeking to have him tried as an adult.
Initially, the JJB, which was operating with only one of its three members, granted the minor bail under several conditions, including the requirement to write a 300-word essay on traffic norms. However, after the Pune police challenged the decision made by the single member, the bail was revoked, and the minor was placed in an observation home.
