Calcutta High Court to Hear PIL for CBI Probe into Woman Doctor’s Rape and Murder at RG Kar Medical College

The Calcutta High Court is set to hear a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on Tuesday, calling for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into the alleged rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in north Kolkata.

The tragic discovery of the doctor’s body was made inside the seminar hall of the hospital last Friday. Preliminary autopsy reports suggest the victim suffered sexual abuse before her death. This has prompted calls for a more thorough investigation, leading to the filing of the PIL.

The division bench, led by Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam, will also consider similar petitions during the proceedings. The counsel for the petitioner, Phiroze Edulji, has advocated for the case to be transferred from the Kolkata Police to the CBI, citing concerns over the current handling of the investigation.

Edulji expressed doubts about the integrity of the local police’s efforts and plans to present arguments supporting his claims of a mishandled and possibly compromised investigation. Furthermore, he highlighted a previous case from 2004, where Dhananjay Chatterjee was executed for a similar crime, suggesting a pattern of mishandling in such serious cases.

The Kolkata Police have arrested a man in connection with the murder and charged him with rape and murder. However, the counsel’s assertion points to a potential cover-up, stressing the gravity of the situation and the need for a more transparent investigation.
