Court Grants Custody Parole to Jailed Kashmiri Leader Engineer Rashid for Oath Ceremony as MP

In a significant development from the national capital, a Delhi court on Tuesday allowed Sheikh Abdul Rashid, popularly known as Engineer Rashid, custody parole to attend his oath-taking ceremony as a Member of Parliament. Rashid, who is currently incarcerated in Tihar Jail on charges related to a 2017 terror funding case, will be granted a two-hour parole on July 5 to take his oath.

The decision follows the National Investigation Agency’s (NIA) nod, which did not oppose Rashid’s application for parole to take the oath, albeit with specific restrictions. The court mandated that Rashid’s interactions be limited, particularly emphasizing that he should not engage with the media during his brief release.

Engineer Rashid emerged victorious in the recent 2024 Lok Sabha elections, representing the Baramulla constituency as an Independent candidate. His campaign concluded with a significant victory margin, outstripping National Conference stalwart Omar Abdullah by over 200,000 votes.
