In a recent turn of events, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has withdrawn his plea from the Supreme Court that challenged the interim stay on his bail granted by the Delhi High Court. The withdrawal occurred during a session with a vacation bench consisting of Justices Manoj Misra and SVN Bhatti. The bench permitted Kejriwal’s withdrawal and granted him the liberty to pursue a more substantial appeal against the High Court’s decision.
The development came after the Delhi High Court issued a detailed order on June 25, which led Kejriwal, represented by Senior Advocate Abhishek Singhvi, to reconsider his legal strategy. Singhvi noted the rapid developments in the case, including a new arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). “Given the daily developments and the latest arrest by the CBI, we find it prudent to file a substantial appeal that addresses all pertinent details and challenges the June 25 High Court order wherein the bail was ultimately stayed,” Singhvi told the court.
The context of this legal battle stems from allegations related to an excise scam, with the Enforcement Directorate (ED) presenting significant materials against Kejriwal, which the High Court felt were not fully appreciated by the trial court when it initially granted bail. On Tuesday, prior to the Supreme Court session, the High Court stayed the trial court’s bail order and cited inadequacies in the trial court’s appreciation of the facts laid out by the ED.
