New Regulations for Driving Licences to Take Effect on June 1st: Tests Now Allowed at Private Training Centres

Starting 1st June 2024, individuals applying for a driving licence in India will see a significant change in the process as the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) introduces new regulations allowing driving tests to be conducted at privately operated training centres. This shift from the traditional Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) aims to streamline the licensing process and improve overall efficiency.

Applicants can now submit their license applications either online through the Parivahan website or in person at their local RTO, with fees varying depending on the type of license. Under the new system, authorized private centres will issue certificates to those who successfully pass their driving tests. However, applicants must still visit an RTO to submit necessary documentation and demonstrate their driving skills.

To ensure quality and safety, private driving schools must meet stringent requirements. These include owning at least one acre of land for general training and two acres for training with four-wheel vehicles. Additionally, facilities must be well-equipped, and trainers are required to have at least a high school diploma and five years of driving experience.

The government believes that by involving private training centres, it can alleviate the burden on RTOs and make the licensing process more convenient for applicants. While the move promises increased accessibility and a more streamlined approach, the effectiveness of these private centres in maintaining rigorous testing standards will be closely observed.
