On Saturday, newly appointed Chief Justice of Bombay High Court Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya took oath of Office of CJ.
Governor of Maharashtra Ramesh Bias administered the oath of Chief Justice of Bombay High Court to Justice DK Upadhyaya in a function organised in Darbar Hall of Raj Bhavan at Mumbai.
Justice Upadhyaya was born on June 16, 1965, and graduated in law from Lucknow University in 1991 before enrolling as an advocate on May 11, 1991. He handled civil and constitutional issues at the Allahabad High Court’s Lucknow bench before being elevated as an additional judge on November 21, 2011. On August 6, 2013, he was appointed as a permanent judge.
The collegium observed in its resolution that because Justice Upadhyaya has been a sitting judge of the Allahabad High Court since his elevation 11 years ago, he has gained expertise in dispensing justice in the country’s largest high court, which has a total strength of 160 judges.
The resolution further noted that Justice Upadhyaya was fit and suitable for elevation, and that his elevation would provide Allahabad High Court with enough representation among the country’s chief justices of high courts.
The Bombay High Court, which has a sanctioned strength of 94 judges, is now operating with 66 judges, including 40 regular and 26 additional judges.
Justice Nitin Jamdar, the senior most judge on the Bombay High Court, was acting chief justice since the retirement of chief justice R D Dhanuka in May after only three days in the job.
