Supreme Court Round-Up for February 24

Important cases heard in the Supreme Court on Friday, February 24:

* SC rejected a plea seeking to gag the media from reporting on the Adani-Hindenburg issue till the court pronounces its order.

* SC refused to entertain a PIL seeking a direction to all the states to frame rules for menstrual pain leave for female students and working women at their respective workplaces, observing that the issue falls under the policy domain of the government.

* SC asked the Centre to look into the grievances of seven Patna High Court judges who claimed that their General Provident Fund accounts had been closed.

* SC extended protection from arrest to independent Assam MLA Akhil Gogoi in connection with a case related to anti-CAA protests and suspected Maoist links.

* The National Board of Examinations (NBE) told the SC that around 2.09 lakh candidates have registered for the NEET-PG exam 2023, which is scheduled for March 5, and no alternative date for conducting the exam may be available in the near future if it is postponed.

* SC stayed a Madhya Pradesh High Court order seeking an explanation from a trial court judge why bail was granted to an accused, saying “such orders affect the independence of district judiciary.”

* The common man in India is bogged down by corruption and there is a need to fix accountability at all levels, the SC observed as it dealt with a petition seeking debarment of those against whom charges have been framed in criminal cases from contesting elections.

* SC refused to entertain a plea of Godrej and Boyce Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (GBMCL) against a Bombay High Court order refusing to reverse the acquisition of its plot at Vikhroli for the bullet train project between Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
