Forty-seven lady advocates have written a letter to the CJI of the Supreme Court and have requested the Court to investigate the Hathras gang rape case.

The request is with respect to heinous crime committed against a girl in Hathras

They also requested that strictest punishment should be given to the accused. It was also requested that the trial should be conducted promptly.

The lady advocates further requested the Court that punitive action should be taken against all erring officials, including police and medical personnel. An immediate inquiry should also be conducted against officials who are found at fault.

The CJI has been requested to set up institutional mechanisms and redressal procedures so that other victims and their families don’t have to suffer.

The letter directed the Court’s attention to the fact that the body of the victim was cremated without the consent of the family.

Recently, a petition was filed in Supreme Court where the Court was requested to hand over the Hathras gang rape case to Special Investigation Team or the Central Bureau of Investigation. The petitioner also requested that the probe should be monitored by a retired or sitting judge of the High Court or Supreme Court.

The Delhi Commission of Women has also urged the Supreme Court to take the cognizance of the case.
