The Uttarakhand High Court on Thursday announced that it has called off its upcoming silver jubilee celebrations in light of the devastation caused by recent natural disasters across the state.
A bench of the court directed the state government to transfer the allocated sum of ₹1.5 crore, which had been earmarked for the event, to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. The court further ordered that the money be specifically utilized for the rehabilitation of families affected by the calamities.
In a strong display of solidarity, the judges of the high court, along with the registrar, also resolved to contribute their one day’s basic salary to the relief fund.
The decision comes at a time when Uttarakhand has been reeling under the impact of heavy rains, floods, and landslides, which have claimed lives, displaced residents, and caused extensive damage to infrastructure.
With this move, the court underscored the importance of prioritizing public welfare over ceremonial events, signalling that the judiciary stands with those who have suffered during the state’s ongoing crisis.
