Uttarakhand HC Directs Trial Courts to Dispose of Child Trafficking Cases Within Six Months

The Uttarakhand High Court has directed all trial courts in the state to ensure that pending cases of child trafficking are disposed of within six months, underscoring the urgent need for swift justice in such sensitive matters.

A circular to this effect was issued by Registrar General Yogesh Kumar Gupta to all district and sessions judges across Uttarakhand. It emphasizes that, if necessary, trial courts should conduct day-to-day hearings to meet the six-month deadline.

The directive draws upon a recent Supreme Court order dated April 15, 2025, in Pinky vs State of Uttar Pradesh. In that case, the apex court made it clear that no laxity will be tolerated in child trafficking cases, given their grave impact on vulnerable victims.

The High Court has also cautioned that failure to adhere to this timeline could invite contempt proceedings against responsible officials. To ensure compliance, the order has been communicated to every judicial officer in the state.
