UP Court Orders Arrest of AAP MP Sanjay Singh for Failing to Appear in Two-Decade-Old Case

In a significant legal development, a court in Uttar Pradesh has issued an arrest warrant for Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh due to his absence at a hearing concerning a 23-year-old case. The case, which dates back to a protest and road blockade in 2001, also involves Samajwadi Party leader Anup Sanda, who similarly failed to appear.

The Sultanpur court has directed local police to ensure the accused are presented before it by August 28. The non-appearance of the parties prompted the issuance of non-bailable warrants against Singh, Sanda, and four others on August 13, with the initial hearing scheduled for August 20 but postponed due to their absence.

Madan Singh, the attorney representing the accused, confirmed that bail petitions have been filed for Singh and Sanda at the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court, with a hearing slated for August 22. Further proceedings in the MP/MLA court of Special Magistrate Shubham Verma are pending and will be scheduled later.

The origins of the case trace back to June 19, 2001, when former SP MLA Anoop Sanda led a demonstration against inadequate power supply in the vicinity of an overbridge near Sabzi Mandi area, which saw participation from Sanjay Singh and several local councilors.
