The year 2025 is set to be a significant one for the Supreme Court of India as it will witness the leadership of three Chief Justices and the retirement of seven judges. The current Chief Justice, Justice Sanjeev Khanna, will retire on May 13, 2025. Appointed to the Supreme Court from the Delhi High Court on January 18, 2019, Justice Khanna’s tenure as Chief Justice will have lasted from November 11, 2024, to his retirement date.
Following Justice Khanna, Justice B.R. Gavai will assume the role of Chief Justice, serving a brief tenure of six months until November 23, 2025. Later in the year, Justice Suryakant will step into the position, with a tenure extending to February 2027.
Among the judges retiring in 2025, Justice C.T. Ravi Kumar will be the first to leave office on January 5, having served more than three years since his appointment from the Kerala High Court on August 31, 2021. Justice Hrishikesh Roy, who joined the Supreme Court on September 23, 2019, after serving as Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court followed by the Kerala High Court, will retire on January 31.
Justice Abhay Srinivas Oka is set to retire on May 24, 2025, after completing a tenure of over three years. He was appointed to the Supreme Court on August 31, 2021, from his position as Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, having previously served in the Bombay High Court. Following him, Justice Bela Madhurya Trivedi, who also joined the Supreme Court on August 31, 2021, from the Gujarat High Court, will retire on June 9, 2025.
Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia will retire on August 9, 2025, after being appointed from the Uttarakhand High Court to the position of Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court in January 2021 and subsequently to the Supreme Court on May 9, 2022.
