The Supreme Court of India is set to hear petitions on January 15 from the Consortium of National Law Universities (CNLUs) regarding the transfer of multiple cases related to the 2025 Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) results from various High Courts to the apex court. The intent behind these petitions is to consolidate the appeals for an authoritative ruling and to avoid the multiplicity of legal proceedings across the country.
The petitions arose after discrepancies were reported in the CLAT 2025 answer key, which led to several legal challenges filed by candidates in different High Courts. A notable decision by a Delhi High Court single judge on December 20, 2024, ordered the CNLUs to revise the CLAT results due to demonstrable errors in the answer key concerning two specific questions.
The CNLUs, through advocate Pritha Srikumar Iyer, are seeking a centralization of these cases to ensure consistent legal interpretation and to expedite the resolution process. The Delhi High Court has postponed further hearings of related appeals until January 30, pending the Supreme Court’s decision on the transfer.
On December 24, 2024, a division bench of the Delhi High Court upheld the single judge’s ruling on the two questions and permitted the CNLUs to declare the results as per the revised answer key. This bench found no errors warranting an interim order against the single judge’s decision, which has partially satisfied the requests of some challengers.
