Supreme Court Takes Note as Farmer Leader Dallewal Seeks Medical Aid

The Supreme Court on Wednesday acknowledged the health concerns of prominent farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has recently sought medical treatment amidst his continued advocacy for farmers’ rights. The court also took note of his intention to meet with Central government representatives on February 14 in Chandigarh, despite his health issues.

During a session presided over by Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh, the proceedings focused on a plea regarding the implementation of promises made to farmers, including a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for crops following the repeal of controversial farm laws in 2021.

Justice Surya Kant highlighted a recent interview where Dallewal, amidst receiving medical aid, expressed his willingness to engage in discussions with the Centre if his health permits. “He has also reposed faith in the apex court-appointed committee and is hopeful for a resolution during the upcoming meeting,” Justice Kant remarked. In light of these developments, the court decided to postpone further hearings until after the scheduled meeting to avoid any potential misinterpretations or confusion.

The petitioner, Guninder Kaur Gill, argued that the government had initially agreed to the farmers’ demands in 2021 but has since retracted its commitments. The bench urged patience and assured that it would intervene with an order if necessary after the negotiations.

This judicial notice comes after the Supreme Court, on January 22, temporarily suspended a contempt plea against Punjab government officials, recognizing Dallewal’s commitment to his hunger strike while undergoing medical treatment. Earlier, on January 2, the court had queried the Centre about its reluctance to openly address the grievances of the protesting farmers, emphasizing the need for constructive dialogue rather than confrontation.

Dallewal has been a central figure in the farmers’ protests, initiating an indefinite fast at the Khanauri border since November 26 to urge the Centre to fulfill various demands of the farming community. These protests have seen significant participation under the banners of Samyukta Kisan Morcha and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, particularly at key border points between Punjab and Haryana.
