Supreme Court Signals Imminent Bail for 2020 Delhi Riots Accused; Verdict Reserved

In a significant development, the Supreme Court of India on Friday indicated that it will “in all probability” grant bail to Abdul Khalid Saifi and Tasleem Ahmad, two individuals accused in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots.

A bench comprising Justices Aravind Kumar and PB Varale reserved its verdict on the duo’s bail pleas, stating that an official order is highly anticipated either later today or on May 25.

“Most Probably Getting Relief”

During the proceedings on Friday, the two-judge bench directly addressed the defense counsel, offering a strong indication of a favorable outcome for the accused.

“Most probably we will consider granting relief,” the bench observed while reserving its judgment.

Senior advocate Rebecca John appeared on behalf of Abdul Khalid Saifi, while advocate Mehmood Pracha represented Tasleem Ahmad. The bench informed the legal teams that the court expects to deliver its final order during the day’s proceedings or on Monday, May 25.

Delhi Police Request Larger Bench Review

While the Supreme Court is heavily leaning toward granting bail to Saifi and Ahmad, it is also weighing a key procedural request made by the prosecution.

The Delhi Police have urged the court to refer a specific “question of law” arising from the matter to a larger bench of the Supreme Court. The bench acknowledged this counter-argument, noting that it would thoroughly examine the police’s petition alongside the bail considerations.

“However, we will look into the arguments made on behalf of Delhi police for reference of question of law to the larger bench,” the justices added.

With the verdict now reserved, all eyes remain on the apex court as it prepares to release its formal decision.
