Supreme Court Sets 10-Day Deadline for UP Police to Conclude Investigation Against MLA Abbas Ansari

The Supreme Court on Friday issued a directive to the Uttar Pradesh police, ordering the completion of their investigation into MLA Abbas Ansari within a 10-day period. The case involves allegations under the Gangsters Act, and the court’s decision came as part of the proceedings regarding Ansari’s bail plea.

The bench, comprised of Justices Surya Kant and N Kotiswar Singh, stated that they would consider Ansari’s application for bail following the conclusion of the investigation. This decision follows a series of judicial considerations involving Ansari, who has raised concerns about his safety, including fears of an encounter, leading him to request virtual appearances for his trial court proceedings.

Ansari, representing the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party as the MLA from Mau constituency, was implicated in a criminal case filed on August 31, 2024. The FIR, registered at Kotwali Karvi Police Station in Chitrakoot district, accused him along with Navneet Sachan, Niyaz Ansari, Faraz Khan, and Shahbaz Alam Khan under the UP Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act of 1986. The allegations centered around forming a gang to engage in activities such as extortion and assault.

His legal troubles were compounded when the Allahabad High Court rejected his bail plea on December 18, last year, noting that the investigation was still ongoing. Ansari was subsequently arrested on September 6, 2024.
