The Supreme Court on Friday asked Bollywood actor Karisma Kapoor to respond to a plea filed by Priya Sachdev Kapur, widow of industrialist Sunjay Kapur, who is seeking a certified copy of the 2016 divorce settlement between the former couple. The request is linked to ongoing estate litigation in the Delhi High Court, where Karisma’s children are contesting the validity of their father’s will.
A bench led by Justice A S Chandurkar considered the application filed by Priya Sachdev Kapur in chambers and granted two weeks’ time for Karisma Kapoor to file her response. According to sources, Kapoor’s legal team opposed the request, arguing that Priya Sachdev Kapur is a third party to the earlier settlement and has no legal standing to seek the document.
Representing Karisma Kapoor, advocates Ravi Sharma and Apoorv Shukla submitted that the consent terms and divorce decree were already in the possession of Priya Sachdev Kapur and that the petition was not maintainable.
On the other hand, Priya Sachdev Kapur’s counsel argued that the documents were crucial to the ongoing estate dispute in the Delhi High Court, where questions of financial provision, child support, and post-divorce obligations have been raised. Her legal team maintained that access to the original divorce terms is essential for adjudication of these issues.
The matter assumes importance in light of a legal battle that erupted following Sunjay Kapur’s sudden death on June 12, 2025, during a polo match in England. In September 2025, Karisma Kapoor’s two children from her marriage with Sunjay Kapur approached the Delhi High Court to contest a will dated March 21, 2025, in which their father reportedly bequeathed his entire personal estate to Priya Sachdev Kapur, effectively excluding them.
The Supreme Court’s notice to Karisma Kapoor adds another legal layer to the ongoing inheritance dispute, as both sides prepare for a complex litigation over the late industrialist’s estate.
