The Supreme Court of India issued a ruling on Monday, stating that Carnatic vocalist TM Krishna should not be recognized as the recipient of the prestigious M S Subbulakshmi award, pending further investigation. This decision comes as an interim measure in response to allegations made by MS Subbulakshmi’s grandson, V Srinivasan, who has accused Krishna of making scandalous remarks about the late singer.
Justices Hrishikesh Roy and S V N Bhatti noted the enduring respect and honor that M S Subbulakshmi, who passed away in December 2004, continues to command among music enthusiasts worldwide. “She is one of the most distinguished singers, and her melodious voice continues to bring great joy to her fans,” the bench commented.
The dispute originated when Srinivasan challenged a Madras High Court decision that overturned an interim injunction. This injunction had previously restrained a local music academy from bestowing the award upon Krishna. Srinivasan’s legal challenge asserts that Krishna’s “vile, vituperative and scandalous attacks” on social media have tarnished his grandmother’s reputation, making him an unsuitable recipient of the award.
During the proceedings, additional solicitor general N Venkataraman characterized the matter as extraordinary, pointing out that Krishna’s articles allegedly maligned Subbulakshmi. The Supreme Court has now issued notices to Krishna, the music academy, The Hindu, and THG Publishing Private Limited, demanding their responses within four weeks.
