In a recent ruling that could greatly benefit medical students, especially those who aspire to, are pursuing, or have completed their MBBS from abroad, the Supreme Court of India has delivered a decision that aligns with the interests of MBBS students. This judgment pertains to the medical internships, a crucial phase in the training of future healthcare professionals.
The apex court has made it clear that there should be no discrimination against students who have pursued their medical education (MBBS) abroad when it comes to undergoing Medical Internships in India. The ruling emphasizes that if these students are conducting their internships in Indian medical institutions, they are entitled to the same stipend as their peers who have graduated from medical colleges within India.
This landmark decision came to light after some doctors filed a petition in the Supreme Court, raising concerns that certain medical colleges were not providing equal internship stipends to foreign medical graduates as compared to Indian medical graduates. Taking cognizance of the arguments presented by the advocate Tanvi Dubey, representing the doctors, the bench comprising Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice Prasanna Bhalchandra Varale delivered the verdict.
