The Supreme Court of India on Friday paused all proceedings briefly to honour the memory of those who laid down their lives in India’s freedom struggle. All benches of the apex court stood in solemn silence at 10:59 a.m. for two minutes, marking the country’s observance of Martyrs’ Day.
This tribute was observed as part of a nationwide commemoration on January 30, which marks the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, who was assassinated on this day in 1948. The court’s official website had earlier uploaded a circular stating that the silence would be observed “in the memory of those who laid down their lives in the struggle for India’s freedom.”
Following the brief observance, regular proceedings resumed in all courtrooms.
Martyrs’ Day is one of the key solemn observances in India, dedicated to remembering the countless individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice in the fight for independence. Government institutions, schools, and courts traditionally participate in this national act of remembrance.
