The Supreme Court on Monday refused bail to Prajwal Revanna, former JD(S) Member of Parliament, who is currently embroiled in multiple charges of rape and sexual assault. Justices Bela M Trivedi and Satish Chandra Sharma presided over the case, noting Revanna’s significant influence, which contributed to the court’s decision to uphold the Karnataka High Court’s earlier ruling denying him bail.
Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, representing Revanna, argued that the initial complaint did not include section 376 of the Indian Penal Code, which pertains to rape. Despite this, the Karnataka High Court’s decision on October 21 to deny bail remained unaltered, and the Supreme Court found no grounds to intervene.
During the hearing, Rohatgi requested the possibility for Revanna to reapply for bail after six months, but the bench declined to provide any assurance or guidance on the matter, leading to the dismissal of the bail plea.
This legal setback for Revanna comes after a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Karnataka filed a detailed 2,144-page charge sheet in August against him, involving four separate cases. The cases against the former legislator include accusations from a woman who worked as a domestic helper for his family, detailing allegations of rape and sexual assault.
