The Supreme Court Collegium has officially recommended the elevation of Justice Sujoy Paul as the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court. The decision, finalized during a Collegium meeting held on January 9, 2026, marks a significant development for the judiciary in West Bengal.
Justice Paul is currently leading the High Court in the capacity of Acting Chief Justice, a role he has held since September 2025.
Official Recommendation
In a statement released today, the Supreme Court confirmed the recommendation, stating, “The Supreme Court Collegium in its meeting held on 09th January, 2026 has recommended appointment of Shri Justice Sujoy Paul, Judge, High Court at Calcutta (PHC: Madhya Pradesh) as Chief Justice, High Court at Calcutta.”
This recommendation solidifies Justice Paul’s position at the helm of the Calcutta High Court, where he has been serving since his transfer from the Telangana High Court in July 2025.
Judicial Career and Trajectory
Justice Sujoy Paul’s judicial career began in the Madhya Pradesh High Court, which serves as his parent High Court. He enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Madhya Pradesh in 1990. Over the years, he established a robust legal practice appearing before various courts in diverse fields including civil, constitutional, industrial, and service laws.
His elevation to the bench came on May 27, 2011, when he was appointed as a Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court at Jabalpur. He was confirmed as a permanent judge on April 14, 2014.
Transfers and Administrative Experience
Justice Paul brings a wealth of administrative experience from different High Courts. In 2024, following a personal request, he was transferred from Madhya Pradesh to the Telangana High Court, where he took the oath of office on March 26, 2024.
During his tenure in Telangana, he briefly shouldered the responsibility of the administrative head, serving as the Acting Chief Justice starting in January 2025. Later that year, in July, he was transferred to the Calcutta High Court, eventually taking over as its Acting Chief Justice in September 2025.
