In a significant ruling, a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in India sentenced 28 individuals to life imprisonment for their involvement in the 2018 Kasganj violence, which resulted in the death of Chandan Gupta during a Tiranga Yatra. Special Judge Vivekanand Sharan Tripathi, who presided over the case, also imposed a fine of Rs 80,000 on each of the convicts.
The case stemmed from a communal clash that erupted during the celebration of the Republic Day parade in Kasganj, where Gupta was tragically shot dead. The incident led to significant rioting in the area, drawing national attention and sparking debates over communal tensions in the region.
On Thursday, the convicts were found guilty on several charges, including murder, attempted murder, rioting, and insulting the national flag. The court’s decision on Friday to hand down life sentences came after considering arguments from both the defense and the prosecution, the latter of which had pushed for the severest possible punishment.
