The Supreme Court’s administrative wing has written to the Delhi Transport Department requesting the swift allotment of a specific vehicle registration number for a new Mercedes-Benz E220 purchased by former Chief Justice of India, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud.
According to official communication dated July 28, the Deputy Registrar (Transport) of the Supreme Court has asked the Transport Commissioner to allocate the preferred registration number for the luxury vehicle. The letter also urged that the process be completed expeditiously and that the allotment details be communicated back to the registrar’s office.
While the registration number being requested has not been disclosed publicly, such personalised or “fancy” numbers are often sought by high-ranking officials, subject to availability and applicable rules.

Justice Chandrachud, who retired on November 10, 2024, served as the 50th Chief Justice of India and was known for delivering several landmark judgments during his judicial career. His tenure saw key decisions on the Ayodhya land dispute, the abrogation of Article 370, and the decriminalisation of consensual same-sex relationships. Over his eight years in the Supreme Court, he was part of 38 Constitution Benches and played a pivotal role in shaping progressive jurisprudence.
