SC Collegium Approves Appointment of Justice Arvind Kumar Verma as Permanent Judge of Chhattisgarh High Court

The Supreme Court Collegium has approved the proposal for the appointment of Justice Arvind Kumar Verma, currently serving as an Additional Judge, as a Permanent Judge of the Chhattisgarh High Court.

The decision was taken by the Collegium headed by the newly appointed Chief Justice of India, Justice Surya Kant, in a meeting held on Tuesday, December 2, 2025.

The Collegium resolved to recommend that Justice Arvind Kumar Verma be appointed as a Permanent Judge of the High Court of Chhattisgarh against the existing vacancy. The recommendation acknowledges his suitability and performance during his tenure as an Additional Judge.

Justice Arvind Kumar Verma was elevated to the Bench from the Higher Judicial Service.

  • Initial Recommendation: His name was recommended for judgeship by the Supreme Court Collegium in January 2024.
  • Appointment as Additional Judge: He took the oath as an Additional Judge of the Chhattisgarh High Court on January 23, 2024.
  • Career: Prior to his elevation, Justice Verma served as a Judicial Officer and held the post of Registrar General of the Chhattisgarh High Court. His judicial career includes service as a District and Sessions Judge in various districts.

As per the Memorandum of Procedure, Additional Judges are usually appointed for a period of two years. Upon the completion of this tenure, and subject to the availability of permanent vacancies and an assessment of their judgments and conduct, they are considered for appointment as Permanent Judges.

The Collegium, after consulting with judges conversant with the affairs of the Chhattisgarh High Court and assessing the material on record, found Justice Verma suitable for the permanent post.

With this approval, the recommendation will now be processed by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice for the issuance of the final notification by the President of India.
