Record-Breaking Divorce? Pune Couple Ends 3-Year Relationship Just Hours After Wedding

In a startling instance highlighting the complexities of modern relationships, a marriage in Pune dissolved within just 24 hours of the wedding ceremony. Despite a three-year courtship leading to a “love marriage,” the couple—a doctor and an engineer—opted for a legal separation immediately after tying the knot due to irreconcilable differences regarding their living situation.

The Immediate Fallout

The swift dissolution of the union has drawn attention due to the unusual speed of the legal proceedings. According to reports, the couple realized their incompatibility the very day after the wedding and began living separately immediately.

Advocate Rani Sonawane, who handled the case, revealed that the primary contention arose from the husband’s career specifics, which were ostensibly not fully clarified prior to the nuptials. The husband, an engineer, informed his wife post-wedding that his employment was on a ship. However, he was unable to specify his posting locations or the duration of his time away at sea.

Irreconcilable Differences

This lack of clarity regarding their matrimonial home and future living arrangements created an immediate impasse. The wife, a medical professional, and the husband could not reach a mutual agreement on how to manage this uncertainty.

“The marriage was a love marriage, and the couple had known each other for two to three years prior to tying the knot,” Advocate Sonawane stated. She expressed surprise that such a fundamental aspect of their future life—the nature of the husband’s maritime job and its impact on their residence—was not discussed or resolved during their lengthy courtship.

A Swift Legal Resolution

In a legal landscape where divorce proceedings often stretch over years, this case stands out for its calm and rapid resolution. Advocate Sonawane emphasized that the separation was entirely mutual and devoid of the acrimony often seen in matrimonial courts.

“Importantly, there was no allegation of violence or criminal wrongdoing in the case. Both individuals opted to follow the legal process calmly and ended the marriage by mutual consent,” Sonawane said.

The court facilitated the swift decision by taking into account the specific circumstances and applying relevant guidelines from the Supreme Court intended to expedite cases where the marriage is irretrievably broken or where mutual consent is evident without the need for prolonged cooling-off periods.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the necessity for transparency in pre-marital discussions, even in relationships that have spanned several years.
