Rampur Court Sentences SP Leader Azam Khan and Son Abdullah to 7 Years in Dual PAN Card Case

A Special MP-MLA Magistrate Court in Rampur on Monday sentenced senior Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan and his son Abdullah Azam Khan to seven years’ imprisonment in connection with the dual PAN card case filed in 2019.

The case was lodged by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Akash Saxena at the Civil Lines Police Station, Rampur. In his complaint, Saxena alleged that Azam Khan and his son had obtained and used two different PAN (Permanent Account Number) cards each, both showing varying dates of birth. He further alleged that the father-son duo used forged documents to procure the PAN cards and carried out banking and income tax-related transactions through them.

Following trial, the court found both accused guilty and handed down a seven-year sentence under relevant sections pertaining to forgery and fraudulent use of documents.

The conviction adds to the mounting legal troubles of Azam Khan, a senior politician who has been entangled in more than 100 criminal cases over the years. He was previously jailed for nearly 23 months before securing bail in September 2025.

Recently, Khan received some relief when a Lucknow court acquitted him in a separate case from 2014, which alleged misuse of official government stationery to make defamatory remarks against the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) during his tenure as a minister in the then Samajwadi Party government. The court, citing lack of sufficient evidence, ruled: “After considering all aspects, the court is of the opinion that the charges against accused Azam Khan have not been proven beyond doubt. Hence, he deserves to be acquitted.”
