Rajasthan HC Rejects Asaram’s Plea for Extension of Interim Bail in 2013 Rape Case

The Rajasthan High Court on Wednesday dismissed a plea filed by self-styled godman Asaram seeking an extension of his interim bail in connection with the 2013 rape case. The court found no grounds to prolong his relief, holding that his medical condition was not critical.

A division bench comprising Justices Dinesh Mehta and Vinit Kumar Mathur relied on the medical report submitted by doctors of the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital. The report indicated that while Asaram had health concerns, his condition did not warrant further extension of bail.

As per the court’s order, Asaram’s bail period will expire on August 29, after which he must surrender before Jodhpur Central Jail authorities.

While rejecting the extension plea, the bench directed that Asaram be provided with a wheelchair and the help of an aide during his custody to facilitate his movement. The court also permitted authorities to shift him to AIIMS Jodhpur for medical examination if necessary.

Asaram’s interim bail had earlier been extended based on reports citing critical cardiac complications. Following this, the High Court had asked for a detailed evaluation by a medical board of cardiologists and neurologists at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, whose findings were placed before the bench on Wednesday.

In a separate case, Asaram continues to enjoy interim bail granted by the Gujarat High Court until September 3. On August 19, the Gujarat bench extended his bail after noting his ICU admission and reports describing his health as critical.

The Rajasthan High Court’s rejection of his plea underscores a stricter approach to his custodial status, balancing medical concerns with the need for him to face judicial proceedings.
