A PIL (Public Interest Litigation) has been filed in the Apex Court seeking a stay on the MP government’s project in Chhatarpur’s Bakaswaha region, where 2.5 lakh trees would be cut down to extract diamonds.
The government has given this project to the Aditya Birla Group and is said to be worth about 2500 crores. The PIL has been filed by Neha Singh through Advocates Preeti Singh and Sunklan Porwal
Further, the plea states that it has been filed against ESSEL Mining and Aditya Birla group, which are planning to cut down approx 2,15,875 trees to mine for diamonds.
It is stated that earlier, the petition had moved the NGT, Bhopal Bench, but the case could not be listed.
It is stated that the Court should stop the respondents from vandalising the natural resources of the nation in the name of development.
Further, It has been states that the petition was filed with an intention to combat the issue of various climatic changes due to deforestation, which eventually creates a negative impact on humankind.
The petition points out that by permitting deforestation, the government has violated Environmental Laws, and the fundamental rights of the people have also been violated.
Such an act of cutting down trees was irreversible and would hurt the Buxwaha Protected Forest region.
