NGT Levies Rs 10,000 Fine on UP for Non-Compliance in Water Body Restoration Case

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the Uttar Pradesh government for failing to submit a compliance report regarding the restoration of Sadar Talab, a pond located in the Kadaura Nagar Panchayat area of Jalaun district. This decision marks a reinforcement of the tribunal’s commitment to environmental compliance.

During the hearing on December 20, the bench, comprising judicial member Justice Sudhir Agarwal and expert member A Senthil Vel, noted that neither the local authorities of Nagar Panchayat Kadaura nor the state government had adhered to the NGT’s previous orders issued in September, which demanded updates on restoration efforts.

The tribunal expressed its dissatisfaction with the responses so far, highlighting that the Uttar Pradesh State Pollution Control Board’s prior reply was inadequate and lacked the required compliance report. As a result, an additional fine of Rs 5,000 was imposed on the pollution control board, granting them an additional two weeks to meet their obligations.
