Maintain Decorum, This Is Live-Streamed: Supreme Court Warns Advocate During Hearing

The Supreme Court of India warned an Advocate about maintaining courtroom decorum, highlighting that the proceedings were being live-streamed to a public audience. The incident unfolded during a particularly tumultuous hearing, which saw repeated disruptions prompting a rebuke from the bench led by Justice Surya Kant.

The Justice addressed the advocates, emphasizing the need for professional conduct which befits the dignity of the judiciary. “If all of you behave like this, don’t you realize this is being live-streamed? These proceedings are in the public domain. What kind of impression does this behavior create for the public? You are all officers of the court!” Justice Surya Kant remarked during the proceedings.

The apex court, observing the declining standards of courtroom etiquette among the bar, pointed out the necessity for enhanced training, particularly for those within their first decade of practice. The bench specifically called out an advocate with seven years of experience, criticizing the manner of interruption and lack of respectful addressal to the court. “In seven years, this is what you have learned? Interrupting with so-called arguments in the most disgraceful manner! Is this how you address the Supreme Court of India?” the Justice queried.

With a cautionary tone, the bench warned of severe repercussions for such demeanor, including the potential for suspension of practicing licenses. “Even now, you show no remorse. You seem to think you are above the law! If we lost our temper, imagine the consequences. There must be decorum maintained in the Supreme Court of India!” Justice Surya Kant added.

Though the court adjourned without immediate disciplinary action, it was clear that future hearings might delve into possible sanctions against the disruptive behaviors witnessed. Justice Surya Kant also expressed concerns over the misuse of legal authority and stressed the significance of accountability within legal practices.
