Madhya Pradesh High Court Orders Police Protection for Interfaith Couple Amid ‘Love Jihad’ Controversy

The Madhya Pradesh High Court has issued an order for police protection to an interfaith couple in Jabalpur, aiming to safeguard them against potential threats and familial interference. The directive came after Telangana BJP MLA T Raja called on the state’s Chief Minister, Mohan Yadav, to prevent their marriage, labeling it as a case of “love jihad”.

Justice Vishal Dhagat, overseeing the case, took the testimony of the couple in his chambers due to concerns that their relatives might disrupt court proceedings. The couple, who have been in a live-in relationship for a year, expressed their desire to marry and voiced fears of abduction by family members, prompting them to seek legal protection.

The court’s comprehensive protective measures include escorting the woman to her residence to collect her belongings and subsequently moving her to a shelter where she will be provided with food and a safe place to reside until November 11. During this period, she will be isolated from contact with her family and her partner, allowing her time to contemplate her marriage decision freely.

On November 12, the court plans to record her statement before the Registrar of Marriage under the Special Marriage Act, indicating a possible advancement towards their legal union. The woman’s partner is also to receive police protection and will be temporarily relocated to an undisclosed location for his safety.

Justice Dhagat’s order also addressed potential violations of the couple’s safety, instructing the Superintendent of Police in Jabalpur to take legal action against anyone attempting to forcibly contact or restrain them.
