In a recent hearing at the Delhi High Court, expelled BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar requested an extension of his interim bail for five months due to medical issues in connection with the 2017 Unnao rape case. The request was heard by a bench comprising Justices Prathiba M Singh and Amit Sharma, who have postponed the decision to December 20, the current expiry date of Sengar’s interim bail.
During the proceedings, the court highlighted a communication from AIIMS, which raised concerns about the number of visitors Sengar had received during his stay for medical evaluation. The hospital noted that the large volume of visitors had disrupted routine operations and compromised the quality of medical care provided. The justices requested a detailed report from the AIIMS medical board to assess Sengar’s health claims further.
Sengar’s counsel argued that only family members had visited him, contesting the implications of AIIMS’ concerns. The former politician, serving a life sentence, was granted a temporary suspension of his sentence on December 5 for medical evaluation at AIIMS. His health issues reportedly include cataract among other ailments.
Kuldeep Sengar is also serving a concurrent 10-year jail term for the custodial death of the Unnao rape survivor’s father and was granted interim bail in this matter until December 20 by a different bench. He continues to appeal the December 2019 trial court’s verdict in the rape case, seeking to have it overturned.
