Karnataka High Court Stays Case Over Missing Pet Cat in Anekal

The Karnataka High Court has placed a stay on the proceedings of a unique legal dispute involving a missing pet cat named Daisy in Anekal, near Bengaluru. Justice M Nagaprasanna issued the stay order during a hearing on July 22, pausing further legal actions in a case that has captured local attention.

The legal tussle began when the owner of Daisy filed a complaint alleging that her neighbor had effectively kidnapped her cat. According to the owner, Daisy went missing while playing along the walls of adjacent houses. The owner further claimed that CCTV footage showed Daisy inside the neighbor’s premises, leading to the filing of charges under severe sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including intentional insult, criminal intimidation, and insulting the modesty of a woman.

During the court session, the defense counsel for the accused neighbor argued that the nature of cats to roam, including entering and exiting through open windows, is typical and should not be grounds for criminal charges. They contended that allowing the case to proceed could set a precedent for similar trivial complaints to congest the legal system. Notably, the police had already filed a chargesheet in the matter, indicating initial agreement with the complainant’s allegations.

In ordering the stay, Justice Nagaprasanna directed that all further proceedings be halted until the petition is fully resolved. The decision underscores the court’s cautious approach to potentially frivolous litigation, especially in cases involving everyday disputes between neighbors over pets.
