The Karnataka High Court on Thursday dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for allegedly making derogatory remarks about former Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna during the 2024 Lok Sabha election campaign.
The PIL, filed by the All India Dalit Action Committee, Bengaluru, claimed Gandhi referred to Revanna as a “rapist” during a public address in Shivamogga, seeking an official apology and actions from authorities including the National Commission for Women and Karnataka State Police. However, the division bench comprising Chief Justice NV Anjaria and Justice KV Aravind dismissed the petition as “misconceived” and a “waste of judicial time,” imposing a fine of Rs 25,000 on the petitioner for the frivolous litigation.
While the bench refrained from assessing the merits of Gandhi’s alleged remarks, it highlighted that political speeches and public statements fall outside the purview of judicial review under Article 226 of the Constitution. The court noted that such matters typically require substantial evidence and material review, and suggested that the petitioner seek alternative legal remedies.
Moreover, the court issued a general advisory to all politicians, emphasizing the importance of maintaining decency, decorum, and responsible language in public discourse. It remarked on the declining standards of public life and urged political figures to uphold higher ethical standards in their communications.
