Kancheepuram DSP Remanded for Inaction in SC/ST Act Case, Moves Madras High Court

Kancheepuram Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) M. Shankar Ganesh, who was remanded to judicial custody by the Principal Sessions Court for allegedly failing to act in a case under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, has approached the Madras High Court challenging the order.

On Monday, Principal Sessions Judge Pa U. Chemmal, who is also the designated special judge for SC/ST cases, ordered the arrest and remand of the DSP until September 22. The order came after the officer appeared before the court in connection with a petition alleging police inaction on a complaint filed over a month ago. The court took suo motu cognisance of the lapse, noting that the DSP, as investigating officer, had failed to comply with mandatory provisions under the Act.

Following the remand order, DSP Shankar Ganesh reportedly developed health complications linked to high blood pressure and was admitted to a government hospital. He remained under observation till Tuesday afternoon, even as judicial remand remained technically in force, a senior police official confirmed.

The case relates to the “bakery violence” incident in Walajabad, which was registered under the SC/ST Act. The court had directed the investigating officer to file a status report on the matter. However, the DSP’s alleged failure to submit the report and act as per statutory requirements prompted the judge to initiate action.
