Justice Shamim Ahmed was officially sworn in as a judge of the Madras High Court on Monday, increasing the total number of judges at the court to 67. The ceremony was conducted by Chief Justice K R Shriram in a straightforward event held at the High Court premises.
Previously serving at the Allahabad High Court, Justice Ahmed’s transfer comes as part of a routine judicial reassignment. With his addition, the Madras High Court now operates with 67 judges, nearing its sanctioned capacity of 75.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by notable figures including Advocate General P S Raman, who delivered the welcome address. Also present were Chairman Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, P S Amalraj, and presidents of various advocates’ associations, who collectively welcomed the new judge to the bench.
In his response, Justice Ahmed expressed his gratitude towards both the bench and the bar for their support. Born in 1966 in Allahabad, he completed his law degree in 1993 and started his career in advocacy. His judicial journey saw him appointed as an additional judge of the Allahabad High Court in 2019, where he ascended to the role of a permanent judge by 2021, marking a significant milestone in his legal career.
