The Ministry of Law and Justice has announced the appointment of Justice Manoj Kumar Tiwari as the Acting Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court, effective from October 11, 2024. This appointment follows the retirement of Chief Justice Ritu Bahri, scheduled for October 10, 2024.
The official notification from the Ministry outlined the constitutional basis for this appointment, stating, “In exercise of the power conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Manoj Kumar Tiwari, Judge of the Uttarakhand High Court, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of that High Court with effect from 11.10.2024 consequent upon the retirement of Ms. Justice Ritu Bahri, Chief Justice, Uttarakhand High Court on 10.10.2024.”
Justice Tiwari, who has served with distinction on the bench of the Uttarakhand High Court, is recognized for his judicial prudence and extensive legal knowledge. His temporary elevation comes amid considerations by the Supreme Court Collegium, which has recommended Justice Narendar G, currently a judge at the Andhra Pradesh High Court, for the permanent position of Chief Justice of the Uttarakhand High Court. This recommendation, made on September 24, 2024, is pending approval from the Central government.*
Until a final decision is reached regarding Justice Narendar’s appointment, Justice Tiwari will lead the Uttarakhand High Court. His role as Acting Chief Justice is pivotal in maintaining the continuity and integrity of judicial proceedings in the state during this transitional period.
