GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court has designated 41 advocates as Senior Advocates, spanning the states of Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh. The decision, made by the Full Court in its meeting on April 24, 2026, was formally announced via Notification No. 30.
The High Court exercised its powers under Section 16(2) of the Advocates Act, 1961, read with Rule 3 of the Gauhati High Court (Designation of Senior Advocates) Rules, 2025. The designations come into effect from the date of issuance of the notification.
State-wise Breakdown of Designations
The list of designated Senior Advocates includes legal practitioners from various bars across the northeast region:
- Assam (33 Advocates): The majority of the new Senior Advocates are from the Principal Seat at Guwahati, including Anan Kumar Bhuyan, Barnali Chowdhury, Biswajeet Goswami, and others. The list also features representatives from district bars such as Budh Karan Kejriwal (Tinsukia Bar), Dileep Kumar Kothari (Kamrup Metro Bar), Mohendra Nath Dutta (Golaghat Bar), Rintu Goswami (Jorhat Bar), and Shyam Dutta and Shyamal Seal from the Dibrugarh Bar.
- Nagaland (1 Advocate): Ashipri Zho from the Kohima Bar has been designated.
- Mizoram (3 Advocates): From the Aizawl Bar, Dinari T. Azyu, C. Zoramchhana, and F. Lalengliana have been conferred the senior gown.
- Arunachal Pradesh (4 Advocates): Rintu Saikia, Pritam Taffo, Dicky Panging, and Tadup Tana Tara from the Itanagar Bar have been designated as Senior Advocates.
Clarification on Seniority and Deferred Applications
The High Court clarified in its notification that the names listed are not arranged according to seniority based on their dates of enrollment at the Bar.
Furthermore, the Full Court decided to defer the remaining applications for designation as Senior Advocates. These pending applications will be considered at a later date in accordance with the existing Rules.
